How it is drawn

Real astronomy, drawn as an engraving.

The skies are computed, not decorated: the planets from JPL’s orbital elements, the stars from the catalogue as they stood over the birthplace at local midnight. The engravings are traced from ink drawings in the style of toile de Jouy and printed as two plates, a hair off register, the way riso posters are. The data is real even if the tiger is decorative.
