Reading your book sends us nothing. The birthday you type is processed entirely
in your browser, and it lives in the part of the web address — the fragment,
after the # — that browsers never transmit to a server. Reading
the book sets no cookies and runs no advertising tag. We never sell your
personal information. The only data that goes to an advertiser is described
under Advertising below — in California's sense of the
word, that counts as sharing, so we would rather name it than claim a clean
sweep we no longer have.
There is one advertising tag on the site — Pinterest's, so we can tell which ads lead to a poster being bought. It is deliberately fenced: it does not run at all while a book is open, and the pages that carry it are the front page before you enter a date and the thank-you page after a purchase. It never receives your birthday. The detail is under Advertising.
The day pages (/born/july-15 and so on) are
different in one respect: they are ordinary public pages, the same for
everyone born on that calendar day, and requesting one tells our server the
day like any web page would. They carry no year and nothing about you. When
you add your year there, the book opens the same way as always — after the
#, unseen.
Your birthday: not collected. It is never sent to us, never stored by us, and never appears in our logs.
Ordinary server logs. Like any website, our host records standard request information — IP address, browser and device type, the page requested, and the time. These are used to keep the site running and secure, and are retained for 30 days.
Aggregate analytics. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views and how readers arrive. It sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, and does not fingerprint or build a profile of you.
It does not receive your birthday. The date lives in the part
of the address after the #, and that part is not included in what
the analytics script reports — it sends the page path only. We checked this by
loading a book and reading what actually left the browser, rather than taking
it on trust.
Fonts. Typefaces are served from this site, not from Google Fonts or any other font service. Apart from the analytics script and the advertising tag described below, nothing on the page is fetched from anyone but us.
The Pinterest tag. We advertise on Pinterest, and Pinterest's conversion tag tells them when someone who saw an ad went on to buy a poster, so we know which ads are worth paying for. It records the page address, the fact of a purchase and its amount. Unlike the rest of the site, this tag does set cookies, and Pinterest may use what it sees to measure and target ads.
What we keep it away from. Two things, on purpose. It is never loaded while your book is open, because the tag reports the page's full address and your birthday is in that address — so it only runs on the front page before you type a date, and on the thank-you page after a purchase. And we never hand it your email address, hashed or otherwise, though the tag offers to take one. Pinterest learns that a sale happened and what it was worth, not who made it.
Turning it off. Any tracker blocker, or Pinterest's own personalisation settings, will stop it; nothing on this site depends on it working.
The birthplace field. When you click into "Born in" on the poster page, your browser downloads our list of the world's towns (from GeoNames) and matches what you type against it locally. Nothing you type in that field is sent to us or to any map service.
Email is always optional and never required to read your book. There is one place to give us an address — the poster waitlist on the last page — and it asks for the address and nothing else.
We do not collect your birthday with it. The waitlist form sends us your email address on its own; the date stays in your browser, where the rest of the site keeps it. We store the address, and the date you joined.
Who else handles it. The list is stored with Resend, an email service that holds it on our behalf and does not use it for anything of their own. They are the only company that receives anything you give us.
Buying the digital poster is the one moment the poster’s details leave your browser, because a file cannot be drawn without them. When you press the button, the date, the name and the place you typed, and your choice of edition go to our server and to Stripe, who take the payment; Stripe also sees your email and your card, which we never do. Stripe keeps its record of the sale as payment processors must.
If you order the print, Stripe also collects a shipping address, and we pass the recipient's name and address, with the print file, to Printful, who make and ship it; they keep the order record a print house must, and Printful fetches the file from us with the same signed link you receive. That is the whole list of companies that receive anything you give us: Stripe, Printful, Resend. (Pinterest is told that a purchase happened and what it was worth — never who bought, and never what was on the poster.)
We keep nothing. There is no database of posters. The link you are sent carries the poster’s details inside it, signed so it cannot be altered, and each file is drawn afresh at the moment you ask for it. When the link expires (ninety days), nothing remains on our side to expire with it. We do send you one email with the link, through Resend, and we may reply if you write to us.
Birthday Atlas is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. A birthday after 2010 opens at the poster page rather than the full book — it is, almost always, a gift being made by an adult — and the same rule applies: the date is processed in your browser and never sent to us.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to get a copy, to correct it, or to have it deleted. If this policy changes we will update the date at the top. Material changes affecting people on our email list will be sent to that list.
